VERHALEN VAN GRONINGEN

For my graduation assignment I worked with my client ‘De Verhalen van Groningen’ to create a product that would engage young adults with the history of Groningen. After conducting research, a number of concepts were developed that ultimately led to a final prototype.

The Game

In the game the player is appointed mayor of Groningen in the year of its founding and is tasked with expanding the city.

 

Gameplay consists of an idle game loop, the player continuously earns currency which can be spent on expensive upgrades and placing buildings to further increase their income. By improving their city, the years advance in-game and the player gets to experience real historic events that affected the city of Groningen. These events are written from a first person point of view, allowing the users to experience history first hand as it unfolds.

Testing the prototype among the target audience indicated an increased interest in learning more about Groningen’s history.

My Role

As this was a solo graduation project, I was fully responsible for the research, concepting, prototyping, evaluation, etc.

The client was pleased with the result but hasn't decided to develop the prototype any further.
