THE LONG WAY

The Long Way is a text-based dating game developed with a 2-man team during a 48 hour global game jam which had the theme of transmissions.

The Game

In the game the player plays a space trucker trying to alleviate the boredom of a long trip through space by using the galactic net’s biggest chatting site ‘Smegle’.

Here they can have conversations with a number of characters and possibly have a romantic or otherwise profitable outcome.

In every screen the player is presented with a number of dialogue options, selecting an option moves them to the next screen. We aimed towards a branching narrative, replicating the intricacies of online chatting, where each option chosen could drastically change the outcome of the conversation.

My Role

I started with the initial concept of the game and defined the design in later stages.

Afterwards I took on the coding aspect of the development, while a simple game my inexperience with coding at the time made it quite a challenge.

Furthermore I also wrote 2 of the conversations in the game named ‘pleasure tron’ and the ‘catfish’.

Current State

The game was released at the end of the game jam. The concept was implemented in a rather crude manner, but it did end up in a functional state. A build of the game can be found here:
