INVASION OF THE BLOB

This game was created during the 48-hour GMTK Game Jam 2020 with a group of 5. The theme of this game jam was ‘Out of Control’. After brainstorming we came up with a concept where the player isn’t directly in control of its character.

The Game

In Invasion of the Blob the player is charged with unleashing their army of blobs and consuming everything. At the start of a level the player can choose a position where to place their blob.

 

When choosing a position it’s important to look at what items are in the vicinity, for a blob can only consume items that are smaller than itself.

 

With every item the blob consumes it grows in size and eventually splits itself into multiple blobs. After the blob has been placed in a level the player has no control over it directly.

My Role

For this Game Jam, I came up with the main concept and iterated on the design of the game. I also designed two of the levels named ‘alley’ and ‘restaurant’. Additionally, I spent more time managing all the participants in our group, making sure they knew what to work on and helped resolve any issues that arose.

Current State

This game was published at the end of the game jam in a playable state. Due to time constraints of the game jam there are elements that can be improved in the game. Additionally, feedback did reveal that the passive element of the game isn’t very engaging which could be altered if the game was further developed.
